Sunday School with Smith & Davis Salon of Chicago was an afternoon full of fast and furious learning. Stevie Smith and Michael Davis worked alongside our own Niki Haberberger on simultaneous cuts, colors, and up styles, dispensing all types of knowledge.
A Wella Design Team Artist, Stevie led us through an updo on a long layered cut with a subtle ring of lemon color, before tucking into a free-handed men’s shag.
Michael created a long layered cut with heavy bangs and a disconnected panel adding extra dimension as well as a shorter look on a curly head of hair with a disconnected front.
Niki treated us to a curly bob with blunt fringe rounded to the model’s forehead. Using tension to create graduation, she then flatironed the bangs to incorporate precision detailing.
“I was trained by Michael,” Niki said, “so even though she’s going to wear this cut naturally, I want to go in and give her really technical bangs.”
A former creative director for Vidal Sassoon, Michael’s words of wisdom reflected his passion for precision: “What do we do when it’s not perfect? What gets us out of trouble? Technique!”
“People are coming in with so much information and using verbiage—that does not mean it’s knowledge and it doesn’t mean it’s correct,” Stevie reminded us. “It has never been more important for us to really find out what it is that our guests are looking for.”
Big thank yous to everyone who attended, to our wonderful models, and to Stevie and Michael for sharing their immense creative energy with us!
