Needle in the Hay is a Green Circle Salon

June 06, 2018

As part of an ongoing effort to make our salon more efficient and eco-friendly, we've partnered with Green Circle Salons, an organization dedicated to recovering and repurposing beauty waste.

Now, instead of going into landfills, our hair clippings are sent to a women's correctional center in Vancouver, where they are fashioned into absorbant booms used to cleanup oil spills. Our foils are incinerated in a closed-circuit system that produces clean energy, and our leftover chemicals are separated into their base elements and kept out of the water system.

In order to facilitate this one-of-a-kind program we include a $2 Eco Fee on all of our service transactions.

On average, salons across North America are throwing out 63,180 lbs of hair clippings, 42,122 lbs of hair color, and 109,512 lbs of foil and color tubes every single day! That's a lot of waste, and we're excited that, working together with our guests, we can help shrink those numbers.

In addition to our partnership with Green Circle, we've also got LED lighting throughout the salon and EcoHeads shampoo nozzles at our shampoo bowls, which reduce our water use by over 60%.

Our product lines are fighting the good fight, too. Kevin Murphy's packaging is either recyclable or biodegradable, and the brand uses natural ingredients from sources that are sustainable and renewable, harvesting them in ways that don't harm the environment.

"We need an industry-wide approach to tackling the seriousness of today's environmental threats," Mr. Kevin Murphy himself said, which is why his brand has also partnered with Green Circle Salons.

Kérastase has set about lowering its environmental impact by choosing ingredients with high biodegradability for all their formulas, and with their newly expanded Aura Botanica line, the brand has reached a 97% biodegradability average. Almost all of Kérastase's products are produced in a factory in Burgos, Spain, which has had a carbon-neutral production footprint since 2015.

It's all good stuff, and it's powerful proof that when we work together we really can make a difference!
